What are Manicures?
A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for the fingernails and hands where it can be done of just the hands or the nails as
well.
The basic manicure normally involves filing and shaping of the nails, treatment of the cuticles, application of polish
on the nails and finally a moisturizing treatment for the hands.
The word "manicure" comes directly from the Latin words manus, meaning "hand," and cura meaning "care". There are specialty
types of manicures such as French Manicures which offer a slight difference in the style of manicures however treat the hands and nails in
essentially the same way. On top of that there is an extension of manicures which call for drawing on the nail, commonly referred too as “nail
art” where pictures are painted on finished nails and decorations in the form of imitation jewels are glued on.
In most developed nations, manicurist who serves clients must obtain a license to operate and also be trained properly. This
is because of the higher inherent risk associated with manicures and pedicures. Many people wrongly consider manicures and pedicures to be as
risk free as other beauty regimes which is wrong. The added risk comes from the risk of breaking the skin with tools that might not have been
properly sterilized after being used on another person that might have a disease like HIV or Hepatitis.
Manicure History
The furthest back that we could trace manicure procedures was 5000 years ago. In India, henna was used for the first treatment
of hands. The term mehendi, used synonymously for henna, derives from the Sanskrit mehandika. Henna is actually a type of plant in which dye was
extracted which is then used to create body art especially on the hands. The way in which it resembles a manicure is that the hands are generally
cleaned and treated before the application of the henna, likewise a manicure also cleans and treats the hands.
5 Manicure Tips
There are some
mistakes commonly committed when manicure is carried out at home. So here are some useful
hints.
1. Most people cut the nails back and forth using an emery board and deeply cut the nail from the left and right
corner. So the nails are most likely to get split and worn out. Use the board from the left to the center by sawing back
and forth a few times. Then move it from the center to the right a few times. To get the right texture and a smooth layer
on the nail use a metal file.
